Q.Tell me about the process of customs clearance.

A.Customs clearance procedures differ slightly between imports and exports. For more information on customs clearance services, please see our General Import/Export Handling (Customs Clearance Service Explanation) page.

Q.What is the difference between Tokyo Port and Tokyo Bay?

A.Tokai Kaiun operates primarily in the ports of Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama, and Chiba.
Tokyo Port refers to the area from the Edo River to the Tama River.
Tokyo Bay refers to the entire bay area of Tokyo. Please note that we do not service the ports of Kisarazu and Yokosuka.

Q.What is meant by cargo handling?

A.This refers to the loading and unloading of cargo and products to transportation equipment such as land vehicles or ships, as well as loading and unloading these into various warehouses.

Handling of small cargo may be done by the human hand, while we use equipment such as forklifts, top lifters, cranes, and gantry cranes for large cargo. Different methods are used depending on the cargo we handle.

Q.What kind of transportation equipment do you have?

A.Our transportation equipment includes trucks, freight cars, and ships.

Q.What kind of facilities do you have for logistics warehouses?

A.Our logistics bases are centered in Tokyo and Chiba.

Q.Can you store imported products?

A.Tokai Kaiun has storage facilities such as bonded warehouses and logistics warehouses mainly at the ports of Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama, and Chiba, meaning we can store your cargo. Furthermore, as part of our 3PL solution, we undertake all management on behalf of our customers, including inventory, demand, replenishment, ordering, warehousing, shipping, returns, red/black corrections, and invoice processing. Furthermore, we also perform services related to distribution processing, such as inspection, price tagging, labeling, and insertion of printed materials, according to the state in which your products are shipped.

Q.What kind of cargo handling experience do you have in port transportation?

A.We have experience with cargo handling for containers, steel, produce, lumber, vehicles, and more. For details, see our Port Transportation Services page.

Q.Can an entire container be shipped to a customer’s own warehouse or partner warehouse?

A.Containers can be shipped if the destination is able to accept large trailers; however, cargo that has not been cleared by customs cannot be sent by bonded transport if there are no bonded facilities at the destination.

Q.Tell me about maritime insurance for import and export cargo.

A.Ships performing maritime transport run the risk of sinking, beaching, and theft. The exporter or importer handles the insurance procedures, and details differ depending on the terms and conditions of the contract.

Q.A free sample has been included in a product arriving from overseas. Do free samples have to clear customs as well?

A.Even samples must clear customs.

Q.What fields does Tokai Kaiun have a track record in when it comes to distribution processing?

A.We do everything from warehouse storage, distribution processing, and proxy management services to nationwide shipping. For details, see our Loading & Unloading and Storage Services page.

Q.Can I import perishable goods that have never been imported?

A.This depends on the product and the country you wish to import it from, so consult us first.
Restrictions on raw imports are not lenient. Not only is there the Plant Protection Act, but other related restrictions such as the Food Sanitation Act and the Customs Act.
Based on our extensive experience, we offer services that integrated everything from arrival to cargo delivery to meet our customers' needs and bring them delight.

Q.My cargo shipments are irregular. Can I still export them without issue?

A.For export shipments there are cases where cargo is brought into the bonded area at the customers’ convenience, which clear customs at the bonded warehouse after the quantity has been confirmed; then there are cases in which the cargo is packed into containers at a customer’s factory, brought into a container yard, and clears customs while still in the container.
In addition to customs clearance services, we also have bonded facilities that let us perform our services in-house, allowing us to respond to irregular exports and inspections as well as sudden schedule changes, and letting us check customs clearance status in real time.
The best thing is to load cargo onto a ship without incident; however, we are praised for our systems that allow us to respond when troubles arise.
