Deadweight Tonnage (D/W)
deadweight tonnage
The maximum weight that can be carried on a ship — the number obtained by subtracting the number of empty (light) discharged tons from the number of fully loaded discharged tons.
This tonnage includes the weight of cargoes other than cargoes, such as fuel, food, water, etc. The carrying capacity of cargoes is calculated by subtracting about 10% from this tonnage.
As it represents the maximum carrying capacity of cargo, it is the basis for the calculation of charter rates.
The calculation of deadweight tonnage is based on the difference between the draft of the ship carrying the cargo and the draft after the cargo is unloaded.
