Displacement Tonnage
Drainage tonnage.
The total weight of a ship, including its cargo — the weight of the ship is equal to the weight of the water that is eliminated when the ship floats on the water, and is therefore called the discharged tonnage.
In the case of a merchant ship, the tonnage will always change as the amount of cargo changes.
In the case of warships, the amount of cargo is almost always the same, so the tonnage is exclusively expressed in terms of the number of discharged tons.
