Net Tonnage.
_BR_The volume of places where passengers, cargo, etc. are loaded—The tonnage of the portion of the gross tonnage from which the engine room, crew quarters, undercarriage water tanks, etc., which are used directly in the operation of the ship, are deducted, expressed in the same units as the gross tonnage. It is usually about 30% less than the gross tonnage.
_BR_ It is the basis for the calculation of various taxes, tonnage taxes, special tonnage taxes, etc., as it represents the earning capacity of a business.
